March Pit Firing
Two-Part Pit Firing Workshop: Earth, Flame, & Form
Saturday, March 7th | 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Sunday, March 8th | 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Taught by the Pit Fire Pro, Kit Grindeland, @GoblinHands
Join us at oUTSKIRT Studios, Southern Maine’s emerging hub for atmospheric firings, for a hands-on, two-day pit firing workshop exploring one of the oldest and most elemental firing techniques. Participants will bring their own bisqueware and work collaboratively to prepare, load, and fire a communal outdoor pit. You’ll learn how to use natural materials—like copper, salt, and organics—to create stunning, unpredictable surface effects unique to the pit-fire process.
Day One includes surface prep of bisqued pieces, loading the pit, and lighting/tending the fire. Day Two is dedicated to carefully unloading, cleaning, and discussing the results. Perfect for ceramic artists looking to expand their firing knowledge and connect with a growing community of wood, soda, and pit fire practitioners in southern Maine.
What to Bring: 3-4 small/medium pieces of bisqueware. Please ensure your bisqueware was thoroughly burnished or received a Terra Sigilatta application prior to bisque to ensure optimal Pit Firing Results!
If you want to learn more about Terra Sig and it’s application, join us for our Pit Fire Prep!
All firing materials and tools provided, but you are encouraged to bring additinoal dressing materials! You’ll get an email with more info on that a few weeks before the firing ;)
All experience levels welcome
