Color and Clay: Thursdays, 6-8:30pm
Color and Clay: Thursdays, 6-8:30pm, October 2-November 20th
Discover the vibrant world of ceramic surface design in our Color and Clay 8-week pottery class. Perfect for beginners and experienced potters alike, this course explores creative ways to bring color into your clay work — from the body of the clay itself to the final glaze finish.
Students will learn hands-on techniques including staining clay with ceramic oxides and Mason stains, mixing and applying colored slips, painting with underglazes, and coloring glazes while creating their own test tiles for a lasting glaze reference library. You’ll also explore surface decoration methods like sgraffito, wax resist, oxide washes, and layering techniques for rich, dimensional finishes.
A special highlight of the course is our Nerikomi workshop, where a guest instructor will guide you through this traditional Japanese method of stacking and slicing colored clay patterns to create stunning, one-of-a-kind designs.
Both wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques will be incorporated, giving you the flexibility to work in the style that suits your skill level and creative goals. By the end of the class, you’ll have a collection of colorful ceramic pieces and a personalized library of glaze and slip tests you can use for future projects.
What You’ll Learn:
How to add permanent color to clay bodies
Techniques for applying colored slips and underglazes
How to mix and adjust glaze colors
Layering methods for depth and visual texture
Nerikomi patterned clay techniques
Handbuilding and wheel throwing for surface design
Perfect For:
