“Clay as Canvas” invites participants to explore expressive, painterly decoration techniques on bisqueware using underglazes, drawing tools, and clear glaze finishes. This one-day workshop, led by local ceramic artist Calla King-Clements, is perfect for artists, illustrators, painters, or anyone curious about bridging 2D design with clay forms.
What’s Included:
One bisque-fired ceramic tray or plate (upgrade or purchase additional pieces on-site)
Full access to Amaco Velvet underglazes, clear glaze, wax resist, and brushes
A guided gallery walk of Calla’s ceramic surface design work to kick off the event
Built-in celebration of student work at the end of the workshop!
What You’ll Learn:
How to approach pottery as a surface for painting and illustration
Best practices for applying underglaze and working with ceramic color
How to wax and glaze pottery for clear, crisp results
Tips on using alternative underglaze tools like pencils, pens, and pastels
Calla will offer introductory color theory tips and drawing exercises, but this workshop is best suited for those who feel confident in their drawing skills and want to translate that experience onto clay.
What to Bring:
Your own underglaze pencils, crayons, pastels, or pens (optional but encouraged)
Your favorite brushes or surface design tools (optional)
Confidence in your drawing abilities and a sense of creative play!
Before You Go:
You’ll wax the bottoms of your work before leaving (we'll guide you!)
Option to glaze your piece with clear glaze before the workshop ends
We’ll fire all work after the event — you'll be notified when your finished pieces are ready for pickup
