Classes – Ongoing multi-week courses designed to build skills over time. Great for beginners looking for a foundation, or experienced makers further developing their practice.
Workshops – Focused learning experiences that may run for one day, a weekend, or a short multi-week series. Unlike classes, they don’t repeat as frequently and are perfect for trying something new or diving deep into a unique or specific project.
Most our of courses are ceramics based, but you will find some non-ceramics workshops sprinkled in!

Hand Building - Multi Level

Explore the tactile art of clay in this 8-week, all-levels class at OUTSKIRT Studios in Lyman, Maine. Learn handbuilding techniques—including coil, slab, pinch, and additive construction—while creating functional and decorative pottery such as bowls, planters, vases, tiles, and sculptural pieces. Students will also explore surface design, texture, colored slips, and glazing, balancing technical skill with personal creativity.

Wheel Throwing - Intro

Discover the art of the pottery wheel in this 8-week beginner-friendly course at OUTSKIRT Studios in Lyman, Maine. With small class sizes and individualized instruction, students will learn the fundamentals of centering clay, pulling walls, and shaping bowls, mugs, vases, and more. The course also covers trimming, glazing, and surface decoration, balancing technical skills with creative expression. By the end, participants will have a collection of wheel-thrown pieces and the confidence to continue their ceramics journey. Focus on both technique and creativity.

Wheel Throwing - Advanced
Wednesdays | 6-8:30pm | 8 Weeks | October 1st-November 19th
Take your pottery skills to the next level in this 8-week class for students with prior wheel experience. Explore advanced techniques such as multi-part vessels, larger forms, refined wall control, and intricate handles, while also developing surface design with slips, underglazes, and glazes. With individualized instruction and a balance of technical mastery and artistic exploration, students will create a cohesive body of functional and sculptural work that reflects their personal style.

Clay and Color - Multi Level
Thursdays | 6-8:30pm | 8 Weeks | October 2nd-November 20th
Discover the vibrant world of ceramic surface design in this all-levels course at OUTSKIRT Studios. Students will learn how to bring color into their clay work through staining clay bodies, mixing and applying slips and underglazes, glaze testing, and layering techniques for depth and texture. A special highlight includes a Nerikomi workshop led by a guest instructor, exploring this traditional Japanese patterned clay technique. Both handbuilding and wheel throwing may be incorporated, giving flexibility for different skill levels. By the end of the class, participants will have a collection of colorful ceramic pieces and a personalized glaze/slip reference library for future projects.

Ceramics in the Garden
Sundays | 3–5:50pm | 8 weeks | September 28th – November 16th
Bring your garden to life with handmade ceramic art in this 8-week course at OUTSKIRT Studios. Students of all levels will create functional and decorative outdoor pieces such as planters, wind chimes, bird feeders, ollas, and bird baths, using both hand building and wheel throwing techniques. Surface design, texture, and glazing methods will be explored to ensure durable, weather-ready results. An optional add-on Pit Firing Workshop offers the chance to experiment with unique outdoor firing techniques for striking, one-of-a-kind finishes.Perfect For:

Thursday September 18th | 5:30-7pm
Participants will design and pot their own succulent arrangement, learning about plant care, soil, and container choices along the way. No experience needed—just bring your creativity and leave with a beautiful, low-maintenance piece to brighten your home or gift to someone special. Taught by Sue from Wild Maine Gardens.

Pit Firing
Two-Part Pit Firing Workshop: Earth, Flame, & Form
SUMMER SESSION STILL AVAILABLE:
Saturday, August 30 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Sunday, August 31 | 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Join us for a two-day pit firing workshop exploring one of the oldest and most elemental firing techniques. Participants will bring their own bisqueware and work collaboratively to prepare, load, and fire a communal outdoor pit. You’ll learn how to use natural materials—like copper, salt, and organics—to create stunning, unpredictable surface effects unique to the pit-fire process.
Day One includes surface prep, loading the pit, and lighting the fire. Day Two is dedicated to carefully unloading, cleaning, and discussing the results. Perfect for ceramic artists looking to expand their firing knowledge and connect with a growing community of wood, soda, and pit fire practitioners in southern Maine.
All experience levels welcome!
